Leeds Met Carnegie Men’s teams proved that they are the best university Badminton players around today, by winning the final of the BUCS Trophy and the BUCS championships in style against Bath’s second team and Loughborough University respectively.
The BUCS Men’s Championships Final was an incredibly close affair which truly could have gone Loughborough’s way on any other occasion. It finished 6-2 to Leeds Met.
Loughborough’s number one singles player, Neil White was unfortunate to have lost both of his games, each of which he took to three games.
White came close against Josh Green in the tie’s first game, which ended 18-21, 21-14, 18-21. His ability to recover from difficult shots to go on and win the point was particularly impressive.
His next game saw him up against Leeds Met’s Lim Kenn in what turned out to be the tie’s pivotal match. If White had won this match, Loughborough would have had it all to play for at 3-2 down.
Instead, Kenn came from being one game down to win the match 21-17, 6-21, 15-21, making the score 4-1 to Leeds Met.
Kenn showed great composure and hardly broke into a sweat as he sent his opponent running around the court in the second and third games of the match.
The fact pace of the games took its toll on White, who was visibly suffering after his victory in the first game.
The outcome of this tie could have been very different if Leeds Met’s Harry Wright and Mark Middleton hadn’t shown determination to overcome their opponents in what was one of the tightest doubles games of the day.
Loughborough’s Gary Fox and Peter Briggs worked very hard in the first game against Wright and Middleton but lost the game 21-23.
The next game went in Loughborough’s favour, as they won it 21-19. Wright and Middleton then showed that they were worthy winners, going on to win the game 21-11 to wrap up the match.
Leeds Met men’s success in the badminton was mirrored by their female teammates who also won the Championships and Trophy finals in what was a triumphant day for Leeds Met’s badminton team.
