Is today’s virtual world one of profound isolation?

As we rely more on our devices and being online, it is shaping an unreality that has become the forefront to many of us, leading to a lack of appreciation for the value ‘third spaces’ have in our lives, which are places of leisure outside of our homes and work. The importance of utilising leisure time is crucial for mental health, especially for students at university, offering stress-relief and some time to focus on yourself, your relationships, socialising, trying new things and meeting new people.

It is hard to believe we have so many spaces to explore but majority choose to sit immersed behind their screens, engrossed in the lives of celebrities and influencers rather than our own. Not only are third spaces being neglected, first and second spaces (home and work) are so intertwined by the remoteness of work today.

There is no surprise that people are experiencing loneliness more than ever. Loneliness is becoming so common around young adults, that it is simply normalised and ignored. It can be particularly difficult for university students who are living away from home for the first time.

This is why I remind you of the importance of third spaces.

There is an array of places students can go and socialise, make friends, or simply spend valuable time outside of home whether it’s to study, eat or talk there are places all around here at Loughborough. I find the gym an important part of my weekly routine. Not only do I get my body moving, but it also provides a place for me to reset my mind and feel at peace. I’ve come to realise it is an essential ‘third place’ for my mental health. There are two gyms on campus Powerbase and Holywell both with incredible facilities. Don’t miss out!

Another essential place for me here at Loughborough University is the Pilkington library on campus. With a variety of different study spaces on the four floors, it is the perfect place when I want to study with some friends, with the pantry being a bonus when you need a pick me up snack or drink. The second floor is my go-two space when I want to study and focus by myself, it’s relaxing, peaceful and I personally love the assortment of the books all around.

On a sunny day, what would be better than to sit outside with friends at a local pub or go for lunch at a café. There are so many places to choose from at Loughborough on and off campus. For example, the SU (Student Union) is the perfect sociable place to sit and eat with friends or even study.

Perhaps you want to try something new. Why not explore the town’s cafes: Public is one of my favourites.

From just these few examples, it is clear Loughborough has so much to offer. Going out and enjoying leisure time can truly have a hugely positive impact on mental health as you’ll feel apart of a community rather than feeling alone. Let’s combat the isolation of today’s virtual world by setting a goal with yourself or some friends to find a new place that’s yours, making it apart of your routine so together we can defeat the rise of loneliness.
