With Loughborough’s Student Union election voting week fast approaching, the excitement is only just beginning. This year, there are a total of five roles up grabs, with thirteen promising candidates. One role of great importance is the LSU President role. This multi-faceted role entails leadership of other Executive Officers, as well as bringing an influence of change to the Students Union. Candidates, such as Joaquin Lorenzana, are striving to become the next LSU President. Currently studying for his Masters (MA) in Engineering, Joaquin endeavours to pursue the skills he has obtained along the way within the role of LSU President. We spoke with Joaquin, in the hopes of gaining a deeper insight into what the aspirations rooted in his manifesto for LSU president entail.
What are your top priorities for your time as President?
My top priorities are to enhance communication between LSU and LU to ensure volunteers and committee members are well-informed and supported. I want to strengthen student representation by making sure their voices are genuinely heard and considered in decision-making processes. Additionally, I aim to foster a more inclusive, dynamic, and engaging Students’ Union where every student, regardless of background or interests, feels valued and empowered.
What good work would you look to carry on from this year?
I would build on the efforts made to strengthen student engagement and leadership development. LSU has made great strides in ensuring students are at the heart of decision-making, and I want to continue improving that by creating more opportunities for feedback and collaboration. I would also maintain the strong relationships between LSU and local businesses to provide students with better support, events, and career opportunities.
What experience have you encountered which you believe improved your ability in the role?
My time as David Collett Social Secretary, Hall Chair, Treasurer, and HSF Social Vice Chair has given me extensive leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving experience. These roles have taught me how to manage committees, navigate LSU’s structure, and support students in various capacities. Working closely with different teams has strengthened my ability to listen, adapt, and lead effectively, all of which will be crucial as LSU President.
Where does your personal drive to take up this position come from?
I have always been passionate about student life and community building. Seeing the impact of LSU on students, both in their personal and professional growth, has inspired me to take on this role. I believe in the power of teamwork and inclusivity, and I want to ensure every student at Loughborough feels supported, heard, and empowered to make the most of their university experience.
What should voters expect from your campaign?
Voters can expect a campaign driven by passion, transparency, and student engagement. I will be approachable, open to discussions, and committed to addressing the real concerns of students. My campaign will focus on inclusivity, making sure every voice is represented, and demonstrating a clear vision for how we can make LSU even better for everyone
In the wake of election week, we wish Joaquin and other candidates the very best for their campaigns. Make sure to keep up to date with election-related activities. Voting opens at 8am on the 3rd of March (via the LSU app), and closes at 5pm, on the 5th of March. Happy voting!
