As the chill of winter heightens, so does the workload for many students. Therefore, staying healthy becomes more crucial than ever in winter. Here are some easy, yet effective, tips to keep you feeling your best, to wrap up 2024 in style!
Staying Warm
It is no secret that student houses and accommodation are like iceboxes, and of course, the heating always seems to go on strike during the chilliest days of the month! Here are some ideas to keep yourself and room warm this winter.
Warming Your Room
Investing in a good-quality mattress protector is key – not only will this allow you to have better-quality sleep, but a mattress protector will also keep you warm this winter. Check out Dreams, Panda London, and Dusk, during Black Friday, sales for some good-quality but cheaper-priced mattress protectors.
Cute throws and soft blankets are a must this winter – they spice up your room and act as an extra layer to your sleep, or whilst you work at your desk. Check out Dunelm, Amazon, or H&M Home for great deals.
Hot water bottles are a lifesaver– notonly are they great for when you are feeling under the weather, but they are also perfect for keeping you warm this winter. Amazon has some great deals, so order quickly to enjoy this month!
- Remember, if your heating needs to be fixed, be sure to contact Student Village Central to receive a heater. Do not spend this winter freezing.
Keeping Yourself Warm
Layers, layers, layers – this is the big hack during the winter period. Having fleeces and long-sleeved tops under your hoodies will no doubt keep you warm. To keep your legs warm, why not try out fleece-lined leggings or tights to go under your trousers? depending on how cold you feel this winter. Primark and Amazon are a great option, but for a more expensive option, look at UNIQLO.
A Good Jacket – thin and cropped coats are in no way going to suffice. The perfect jacket should be medium to long, puffed, fleece lined, and waterproof with a hood. Coats and jackets are expensive, but they are an essential investment, especially living in Loughborough.
Hoodies and Sweatshirts – they are both cute to wear, and great at keeping you warm when walking to your lecture or studying in your room. Check out your favourite stores during Black Friday sales, and see what there is to offer.
Hats, Scarves, Gloves, and Earmuffs – they are all vital and a fashionable trend this winter. Find the perfect accessories to match your daily outfits. Explore Primark, H&M, or ASOS for some great student deals.
Tips to Stay Healthy During Winter
While we’ve covered ways to stay cozy during the chilly season, keeping the flu at bay is just as important to ensure you enjoy a healthy winter.
Water and Vitamins – everyone knows how vital water is to your diet and health. The Eatwell Guide on the NHS website advises aiming for 6-8 glasses per day to ensure you receive your necessary H2O intake. Furthermore, all students should invest in good multivitamin tablets this season to ensure they’re staying as healthy as possible. Why not try out Holland and Barrett or Boots in town to pick up some necessary vitamins to improve your health.
A Balanced Diet – it is essential that during the cold and overwhelming months during Winter, you don’t slip into the habit of takeaways or skipping meals. It is a must for everyone to have their three hearty meals a day. this ensures that you have a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables to keep your body fit and healthy.
Hot Drinks – another perfect way to ensure you stay warm and healthy, is by drinking hot beverages; this could be coffee, tea or hot chocolate to help you get through this cold time. But remember, you shouldn’t have caffeine six hours before bed, so ensure you have a stop time! You don’t want it affecting your sleep quality. Instead, try out a fruit tea, such as berry tea or mint! Further, too many cups can do more harm than good, so please remember moderation and try to stay clear of unhealthy energy drinks such as Red Bull and Monster.
Remain Active – walking around campus to your lectures is excellent, especially since Loughborough is so big, but it is also crucial that you still get some form of exercise in. Why not use the university gym if you have a membership, join a class, go for a run/ jog or do a workout in your room (of course, this depends on how big your room is!) It will all help in keeping you healthy during the colder months.
I hope these tips have been helpful. Wishing you a warm, happy, and healthy winter season ahead.
