As the days get colder, the nights get longer and university deadlines loom, you might find it hard to motivate yourself to start your day. But have no fear because “Romanticising your life” might be just the thing you need to get through this season. Creators on TikTok began this viral trend as a way to appreciate the beauty in mundane everyday life, without spending a lot of money on new things or going on expensive trips. Whether it is taking a walk or appreciating a delicious meal with friends, you can romanticise any aspect of your life and bring some light and fun to the most mundane parts of your everyday experience.
Here are some top tips to help you romanticise your life this term!
Indulge your senses
The Autumnal weather can be chilly but going for walks around campus in your coziest clothes is a wonderful way to engage your senses and romanticise your life. This time of year, is perfect for strolling and appreciating the autumnal colours and taking aesthetically pleasing photos. When you are outside take some time to breathe in deeply, feel the cool air and ground yourself in the beautiful natural environment around you. Create a playlist of your favourite songs and don’t be afraid to hum along. Or alternatively you can listen to birdsong and the wind rustling through the leaves as they fall.
Celebrate the mundane
Romanticising the mundane is the easiest way to add some beauty into your everyday routine. Why not try taking a long hot bath or shower at some point during your day, giving yourself a chance to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. You could also give your room a mini makeover, by simply cleaning your space, rearranging your things, and updating the prints on your wall. Having a refreshed room can transform your personal space into a safe place for you to study or relax. University can be busy and demanding so don’t forget to reward yourself with a treat for finishing your work or meeting goals. This can be anything from buying a coffee to watching an episode of your comfort TV show.
Practice everyday gratitude
Try journaling for a week and write down three things you are grateful for every morning. Pick up a new notebook or just use the notes app in your phone and take some time before you start your day to think about what you are grateful for. From the smallest things like having your favourite meal to big things like getting a great mark on your coursework, being grateful can improve your mood and help you start your day. Practicing mindfulness and taking time to reflect on what makes you happy is a really great way to romanticise your life.
Hang out with friends
In the cold months, it’s important to stay active and spend time with other people. Whether you’re hanging out with one person or a group of people, remember to enjoy the time that you have with others and make the most of their company. You could play games, have a dinner party, watch films together or even just go on a walk. Whatever you do, romanticise your life by taking photos, videos or even journal your experience, so that you can remember these special moments in the future.
