The 2025 Formula One season is well underway! We have wound through the slick streets of Jeddah, zipped around Albert Park and seen Sakura season at Suzuka as twenty drivers compete for the crown in the fastest and most esteemed motorsport series. Six races have never zoomed by so fast! How about we hit the brakes and turn in closer towards our championship contenders…
Oscar Piastri – Iceman 2.0
Our current championship leader at the time of writing, Oscar sits atop the standings with a whopping 131 points and four wins across six feature races. His cool, calm and collected character is reminiscent of flying Finns like Kimi Raikkonen and Valterri Bottas before him. However, racing in papaya comes with stiff competition from not just horses, bulls and arrows but his formidable teammate Lando, too. Oscar has held his own against the pressure of a proven race winner and reigning champ Max Verstappen through on-track precision and ice-cool demeanour.
Lando Norris – One-lap Wonder, Lap One Blunder
Sitting in P2 is McLaren OG Lando Norris. Hailing from the golden trio of 2019 rookies alongside George Russell and Alex Albon, Lando’s past misfortunes have led him to bottle many a victory before finally tasting glory at Miami last year. Since then, Lando has had the car to push Max and others for wins and podiums, and has proven time and again to be a nuisance to competitors – and sometimes to himself! His tendency to bottle the opening lap has been an Achilles Heel for the young Brit. When he is dialled in, seldom come close. With 115 points, 5 podiums and a win Down Under, Lando still has a fighting chance of being the top dog in 2025.
Max Verstappen – GOAT with Wings
The Red Bull wonderkid is now a four-time world champion (and a new father!) and arguably the greatest driver in the sport right now. He has taken a tractor known otherwise as the RB21 to the heights of a race win and almost 100 points, wrangled his way to three podiums and has reportedly been spotted frequently in Lando Norris’s nightmares and wing mirrors. The Flying Dutchman, despite his team struggling to give him wings, may still be on the cards to win this year’s championship title on raw talent alone, so do not write him off yet…
George Russell – Forecasting a Championship?
Perhaps the corniest driver on the grid, George Russell is the more experienced driver at the Silver Arrows. No longer in the legendary shadow of Lewis Hamilton, 2025 is a big moment for both Mercedes and Russell to prove that he is the man to lead the team forward to its former glory. While the W15 may not be the quickest car on the grid, the Brackley-based outfit are poised to steal podiums when the conditions are right, with George Russell snatching four of them from the last six races. While we can hope he will not be welcoming his dudes to Skibidi Toilet Baku in 2025, there is still plenty of time for him to get hot on the heels of his rivals before the season finale in Abu Dhabi. He is currently sat at 93 points, and there is time yet to see what he can yabba dabba do to reach the peak of F1.
Let’s not forget about Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton! Although with the team’s current performance, perhaps it is best we do. *sobs*
