Campaign week is among us! After the candidate reveal last week, Loughborough’s Student Leadership elections are in full swing. With thirteen candidates spread across the five roles, it is sure to be an busy election period. With that said, one of the most contested roles, LSU President, has five candidates running. Mia Jackson is one of them. Para sport Chair and Captain of Women’s AU Cycling, Mia has extensive experience behind her campaign. Mia is currently a fourth year Geography with Economics student, originally from Belfast. Mia’s campaign focuses on accountability, communication and engagement – priorities she hopes she can take into her role if elected. We asked Mia some questions about her campaign, allowing us a wider understanding of the details into her manifesto.

What are your top priorities for your time as President?

My three key priorities for the year are ensuring LSU remains accountable, there is consistent communication with all students and that all students are engaged with the union in a way that suits them. I will achieve these through initiatives such as providing quarterly updates to students, ensuring progress on LSU’s 4 strategic aims, investigating the option of loyalty schemes, facilitating feedback opportunities and prioritising student led activities. Reminding LSU we are ran by students for students!

What good work would you look to carry on from this year?

The LSU has gone from strength to strength this year and I would look to carry on all successful initiatives. These include engaging a wider range of students by putting on a mix of day and nighttime events, LSU suggestions and highlighting the projects and events of all sections. Paired with having an engaged, visible and welcoming Student Leadership Team. I will look to ensure the LSU remains the most affordable venue in town.

What experience have you encountered which you believe improved your ability in the role?

I have extensive leadership experience making me the ideal candidate to be your next LSU President! Throughout my time at Loughborough, I have been a Department Chair, School President, Action SIO, sat on University Senate and a Course Rep. This year I am an elected Student Trustee, Women’s Captain of AU Cycling, Chair of the Para & Disability Sport Exec and sit on the DCF Exec Team. My countless experiences have provided me with an exceptional skillset of leadership, communication, teamwork and problem solving. I have a proven track record of leading teams, delivering projects and events, managing budgets and delivering first of their kind initiatives and events.

Where does your personal drive to take up this position come from?

I have had my eye on the role of LSU President since my first year and the opportunity to lead such a large organisation is one that really excites me. My main drivers to run for the position is to give back to the students, ensure the voices of all students are heard and continue to create an exceptional student experience for everyone.

What should voters expect from your campaign?

A lot of green! I am Irish after all! Expect to see me all over campus, in halls, lectures and at sporting fixtures and of course in the LSU building! Please say hello and feel free to ask any questions you have.

If voters would like to get in touch with further questions, are you open to this and how would they go about contacting you?

Absolutely! Please say hello when you see me around campus and you can contact me on Instagram @MIA4LSUPRES

As elections gets busier, we can only wish Mia and other candidates the best with their campaign. Make sure to keep a look out on campus for campaign teams, t-shirts and mascots.
