NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk Concert’ series has gathered widespread popularity online over the last 15 years, showcasing a variety of talented musicians from huge stars to the most obscure artists. What makes the Tiny Desk aesthetic so successful is the intimate setting where the artist’s stripped back vocals can take centre stage. Spanning genres, styles and eras, this series has introduced so many wonderful musicians to the world.

Here are 5 Tiny Desk Concerts you should check out!

Chappell Roan – 2024

A brilliant artist who very recently rose to astronomic fame, Chappell Roan’s concert has gained 11 million views in 10 months. From Chappell and her band’s iconic hot pink looks to the singer’s captivating voice, the best thing about this performance is her ability to beautifully translate her explosive songs into compelling ballads, her voice buoyed by the skilful musicianship of her band. Her setlist includes: “Casual”, “Pink Pony Club”, “Picture You”, “ California” and “Red Wine Supernova”.

Mac Miller – 2018

Rising from 2011’s XXL Freshmen Class, Mac Miller’s career was one of many ups and downs, but what always shone through was his ability to distil his experiences into lyrics that ring true for all of us. Joined by close friend and musical collaborator Thundercat, Miller’s songs are only made better by the multi-instrumentalist’s expert Bass playing. Miller’s Tiny Desk Concert is one of the most viewed on NPR’s channel and highlights just how special he was as an artist. His setlist includes: “Small Worlds”, “What’s the Use? (Feat. Thundercat)” and “2009”.

SWV – 2024

This beloved 3-piece R&B girl group, Sisters With Voices (SWV) rose to fame in the early 90s and have inspired generations of artists with their flawless harmonies. SWV’s Tiny Desk set spotlights their golden vocals alongside the R&B instrumentation that has become a classic of the genre. During the first song the audience even got a moment to shine, singing along to one of the group’s most classic and recognisable hits. Their setlist includes “I’m So Into You”, “Right Here (Human Nature Radio Mix)”, “You’re the One”, “You’re always On My Mind”, “Rain”, “Weak”, and “Anything (Old Skool Radio Version)”.

Burna Boy – 2019

This Nigerian native has spent his illustrious career providing Afro fusion for every occasion. Burna Boy certainly lives up to the name of his 5th studio album “African Giant” and the set list is packed with hits from this album. Tiny Desk’s setting allows for simpler production and lets Burna Boy’s striking voice shine through, backed by the rhythm of his band. His setlist includes: “Gbona”, “Wetin Man Go Do”, “Dangote” and “Ye”.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – 2019 (Our top pick)

The New Zealand band fronted by the talented Ruban Nielson exist in a wonderful niche between jazz, indie and alternative music. Having seen the band live myself I can vouch for their ability to mix intricate melodies with intoxicating grooves. This Tiny Desk set is a wonderful mix of classic songs from the band’s catalogue, paired with Nielson’s unique guitar techniques and his father Chris’ jazz infused saxophone. Their setlist includes: “From the Sun”, “Thought Ballune”, “Little Blu House”, “Necessary Evil” and “Monki”.
