With a powerful and captivating story, “I’m Still Here” is included in the categories of “Best Actress in a Leading Role”, “Best Picture” and “Best International Feature Film”.
Adapted from the homonymous book “I’m Still Here” written by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, the film takes place in the 1970s, when the military dictatorship in Brazil was in its most disastrous shape and form. Through the eyes of a wife and mother, Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres), has to sustain her family by herself, when her husband, PTB deputy Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), disappears after being unfairly arrested.
In Brazil, the film is a box office success, filling movie theatres daily. “I’m Still Here” has the important mission of reminding those who have “forgotten” or ignored the consequences cause by a violent and abusive scenario of power, in which still lingers. The message of “I’m Still Here” can be translated into different national contexts, which proves relevant as a warning against extremist ideas that have unfortunately been gaining more and more attention and space in the media and society.
Eunice Paiva, who has become an important political activist in Brazil, represents the fight against extremist movements that directly threaten people’s lives. Her message warns of the strange political situation we are living in today, which allows us to reflect on recent events.
“I’m Still Here” has been gaining enthusiasm and recognition with its multiple nominations in renowned and important awards in the film industry. The long 10-minute applause at the Venice Film Festival was reverberated into two Golden Globe nominations, including “Best Motion Picture – Language Not in the English Language” and “Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama”, in which Fernanda Torres, with her moving and powerful performance, secured the award.
At the Oscar, the Brazilian film received 3 nominations: “Best International Feature Film”, “Best Leading Actress” and “Best Picture”. In the “Best Picture” category, the film comes as a big surprise. However, after beating acclaimed actresses at the Golden Globes, Fernanda Torres, is definitely among the favourites to take home the award for “Best Actress in a Leading Role”.
In the UK, the Oscar’s ceremony will take place on the early hour of Monday 3rd March 2025. It will be available to watch in ITV1 and ITVX.
