Loughborough town is set for renovation this winter as plans have been released for a £1 million injection into the local area.
The main areas set for improvement are the town centre and Queen’s Park. The town centre will receive electrical and lighting improvements. However, most improvements will be seen in Queen’s Park. The council are going to resurface and improve the drainage of pathways, furthermore, new lighting will light these pathways. Also, additional information boards will be set up within the park. The Carillon, which is located within the park, will also receive a reinstallation of lighting to highlight the centre piece.
The Carillon, opened in 1923, is a symbolic building within Loughborough. Inside, there is a war museum showing World War I and World War II artifacts. It is important for Loughborough that the Carillion continues to be illuminated and stands tall above the town.
Charnwood Borough Council have said the work will cause disruption. It is possible this disruption will affect students living in town when trying to access the town centre as well as on their way to campus. The work is likely to disrupt traffic on Granby Street due to the park entrance and the car park being another area for improvement.
The funding for this work has been supplied mostly by the Loughborough Town Deal; giving £800,000 for the project. The Loughborough Town Deal gained £16.9 million in Government money, for which they have 11 projects being funded. Charnwood Borough Council is contributing £200,000.
Once the work is completed, the council hopes it will revitalise Queen’s Park. In summer, the park is a place for students to study in the sun or gain the fresh air needed when exams roll around.
The Loughborough Town Deal has the aim of upgrading Loughborough and producing a welcoming and exciting town for residents and students.
