2024 is often considered the year of love for most moviegoing audiences. From romance novels being adapted into feature length films with the release of It Ends With Us, to horrifically hilarious romances with films such as Lisa Frankenstein, and eye-catching & self-indulgent love stories like The Idea of You.
It is a truth universally acknowledged…
After almost a decade of cinemas giving rom coms the silent treatment with their limited screenings in cinemas, audiences now get to witness a renaissance of the genre, as we see a new generation of young adults ready to have their hearts stolen away by their favorite romance stories viewed live on the big screen. And what better way to celebrate the rise of this golden age of rom-com cinema than to bring back a classic film trilogy into the spotlight with the announcement of an upcoming sequel.
With the release of the novel titled Mad about the Boy back in 2013, the story picks up from where the third film left off, in a shocking and upsetting turn of events. Bridget’s happy ending- her family with Mark and her children- meets a cruel fate as Mark tragically passes away in a landslide accident, leaving Bridget to take care of her kids all alone. And thus, she enters a new chapter of her life- single motherhood.
To Bridget, just as she is
As many fans mourn the loss of beloved actor Colin Firth in this new film, many have speculated how he’ll make brief appearances throughout the movie in the form of flashbacks as we make room for another special actor. Rumor has it, he’s not the only one making a new appearance in the film – Hugh Grant, the actor behind Bridget’s dastardly charming second movie ex-boyfriend Daniel Cleaver, may reappear in the films as well. When asked about his thoughts on the upcoming movie, he simply states- “It’s absolutely the best (book) and I think it’s very funny and very, very moving. I’m not in a lot, I did a week’s work, that’s it … But when you see the film, you’ll be very moved.”
Right, crikey.
As we enter a new chapter in our lives, so does our lovely and comical protagonist Bridget. We can expect to see more Bridget-esque shenanigans as she tries to manage her alcohol intake, her issues with her weight and new adventures in her dating life. In the new film, Bridget tries to navigate changing norms about women in their 50’s and changes in technology, with the rise of Social Media apps in particular (Perhaps even dating apps…)
With the release date of the film set for the 14th of February 2025, next year’s Valentine’s Day is certainly going to be a heart-warming and humorous one.
So, get ready rom-com enthusiasts, because Bridget Jones is coming back with a bang!
