Honouring Perry’s memory through a list of his best moments in Friends.
Matthew Perry died on 28th October this year and was best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit TV sitcom FRIENDS. Loved for his comedic one-liners, Matthew was known not only for playing a comedy character but for always making everyone laugh whether on set or off set; evident throughout his career of many improvised scenes and lines. Not only this, but Matthew Perry dedicated his life’s work to helping people who are suffering with addiction from setting up a sober living house in 2012 which received an award from the White House, naming it the Perry House. In honour of his memory a foundation has been set up in his name to help others who are battling with addiction.
We have compiled a top 10 list of Matthew Perry’s Best Moments on FRIENDS to honour his memory.
- Season 1 Episode 7: The One with the Blackout
When there is a blackout in the city and Chandler gets stuck in an ATM vestibule with Victoria secret model Jill Goodacre. Matthew Perry delivers some of the funniest lines through voiceover depicting the thoughts in Chandler’s head.
- Season 2 Episode 13: The One After the Superbowl
When the gang all are allowed on a movie set and Chandler reconnects with a former classmate, Suzie Moss, who he later becomes romantically involved. However, when at dinner with Joey, Ross and Suzie Moss, he suffers humiliation when she gets her revenge by leaving him naked in the restaurant bathroom.
- Season 3 Episode 18: The One with the Hypnosis Tape
To get Chandler to quit smoking, Rachel lends him a tape which helped her friend quit. However, not only is the tape successful in helping him quit smoking but also reminds him of what a ‘strong and confident woman’ he is. Throughout the episode, Chandler is then seen to grow increasingly effeminate.
- Season 4 Episode 3: The One with the ‘Cuffs
During Season 4, Chandler begins to date Rachel’s boss at Ralph Lauren, Joanna, even though he openly says he doesn’t like her that much. To protect Rachel’s employment there, he breaks up with her only to result in them both making out in her office where Chandler gets handcuffed to the desk. After Joanna leaves, Rachel discovers Chandler is in there and handcuffs him to a cabinet of metal drawers which leads to one of the show’s funniest moments which was actually a blooper that made it in!
- Season 4 Episode 15: The One with all the Rugby
Chandler has rekindled his romance with Janice but wants to end the relationship very soon after. To avoid the awkward confrontation, he tells her that his company is transferring him overseas so they can no longer see each other. Janice asks where so she can visit and Chandler makes up on the spot that he is going to Yemen, even going as far as giving a fake address and buying a plane ticket after Janice insisted on taking him to the Airport. Janice then persists saying she must watch the plane go off, forcing Chandler to actually take a trip to Yemen.
- Season 5 Episode 2: The One with all the Kissing
After Ross’ wedding in London, Chandler and Monica have struck up a secret romantic relationship. However, out of instinct Chandler throughout the episode kisses Monica when greeting her and saying goodbye. So, in order to maintain the ruse, he kisses everyone, playing it off as a ‘European goodbye’ that he picked up in London.
- Season 5 Episode 14: The One Where Everybody Finds Out
When viewing Ross’ new apartment across the road from Monica’s, Phoebe looks into the window and discovers Monica and Chandler’s secret relationship. This leads to a game of both sides trying to get the other side to cave and reveal what they know. Resulting in many awkward interactions of Phoebe attempting to seduce Chandler to see how far he will go to keep his relationship hidden.
- Season 6 Episode 24/25: The One with the Proposal
Chandler attempts to keep his proposal secret from everyone. But by exaggerating how much he does not want to get married to Monica in order to throw her off the scent. He pushes her towards her ex-boyfriend Richard and nearly messes up the entire proposal. Concluding with Monica then proposing to Chandler.
- Season 8 Episode 13: The One Where Chandler Takes a Bath
Chandler insists that he does not like baths. But after Monica draws him a proper bath, he cannot get enough. This leads to him tapping into his effeminate side laying in a bubbly bathtub and Monica buying him a toy boat to try and make the bath more manly. That is until the entire group piles into the bathroom to witness Chandler enjoying his bath.
- Season 10 Episode 17: The Last One: Part 1 & 2
As the final episode of the show, Matthew Perry asked to have the last line which he delivers a sarcastic ‘Sure, where?’ in response to Rachels question asking if they could go get some coffee. A final comedic delivery into the recurring theme of them all sitting around and drinking coffee in Central Perk which is just under their apartment.
