Our Music Editor, Henna Amin, brings you all you need to know about the Music Societies at Loughborough.

 

Whether you’re a fresher or a finalist, there’s never a bad time to join a society. And although Loughborough is a predominantly sporty uni, we want you guys to see there’s a whole host of opportunities in music at Loughborough, so here’s a low-down of all the Music Societies on campus, and what some of them want you to know:

Music Society: This society is for musicians of all abilities, whether you’re looking for a space to play, people to jam with, or just enjoy hearing music there’s something for everyone. Music Society run weekly jam sessions as well as events and socials, so check their page on the LSU website.

Tuxedo Swing: “Tuxedo Swing is the official Loughborough Student Union Jazz Band. We play everything from Big Band standards through to more modern adaptations, like ‘Uptown Funk’. Anyone is welcome to come join us – we don’t do auditions! If you fancy trying it out we rehearse every Monday from 7pm in the Cope or come see us at the Winter Showcase on 3rd December”.

LSU Classical: If you play an instrument you can join LSU Classical’s orchestra, which has performed at various concerts, or even if you just appreciate the beauty of classical music, this is the society for you.

Your Sound: “Your Sound is a music society which aims to bring people together who have a passion and love for music. Whether you are an experienced musician who wants a platform to showcase your talent, develop new skills, or someone who just appreciates music, Your Sound aims to provide a space for music enthusiasts to do what they love.”

LSU SING!: Loughborough’s student run choir is for singers of all abilities, and perform in the local area – this is great chance to get some experience and meet other singers. Rehearsals are every Tuesday 6.30 – 8.30 in Cope Auditorium, and with no auditions, there’s no reason not to try it out.

DJ Society: “we are about taking in DJs of all abilities, from complete beginner to accomplished DJs, and providing them with equipment to practice or learn on, as well as providing lessons and the potential to play at events in and around Loughborough. On top of this we will be holding many socials and events during the year.”

Rocksoc: Rocksoc is the perfect society for anyone who’s into rock music – whether you like metal, classic rock or punk. They also host trips, and put on a night called Subversion every fortnight at the Union; where rock music takes centre stage, and members get a discount.

RAP Society: “LSU RAP IS FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE HIP HOP. Not just for producer or rappers, the plan for our society is to bring people together who enjoy hearing the music! Check out one of our parties if you’re interested, or come to the studio and see what making a song is like!”,
