Why are the Exec always on residentials? – Katie Wilson

You may have noticed, particularly if you’re an avid LSU volunteer of some description, that this week the Exec had seemingly disappeared. From Thursday 7th January until Saturday 9th, the Exec are away on their Mid-Term review.

Were you aware that they were disappearing and not around to answer your #morethanyourcourse needs? Whilst they’re off having the time of their life (maybe, I can’t vouch for that), we’re here studying and managing our extra curricular duties.

You may have seen the endless tweets about the Exec planning their next few months in office, a particularly appropriate time to share their targets with Exec Elections coming up… However, will we get to see the full reports from these reviews? Label are keen to find out how much these team building and review trips cost the union, and whether they’re really worth it. At times, review days are held in the stadium on campus, and our executive representatives are slightly more available to answer our questions- with automatic email replies often still turned on. Whilst the exam and coursework period may seem like a good time to go away on review with students less likely to be around the union, perhaps a better time would have been the extra week that the Exec were working at the end of term before Christmas.

With our elected representatives being #alwaysonyourside, maybe some of us needed them whilst we’re planning ahead (and juggling other things) around this time..?

If this has affected you, maybe with or without warning this week, comment below or tweet us @LabelOnline

  1. This article shows very little understanding of what the Union Executive do. They are the Executive Board for a multi-million organisation.

The idea that they take some time (2 office days) out to conduct a mid-term review of performance and milestones achieved to date, coupled with plans for the rest of their terms of office and further into the distance should be discarded so they can answer your ’email’ faster is naive and childish journalism.

The end of Christmas term is often a busy period, and when the students disappear for their holidays Exec members can clear the decks from what is undoubtedly the busiest and most hectic period of their time in office. That start of the new year when most students are getting down to studying for exams (rather than writing pointless, baseless articles like this) is actually a clever use of time to get to grips with some strategic thought rather than the frenetic pace of the day-to-day working life of being on Exec (speaking from experience here)

Got to love the bubble and the pretend journos that can be found in LSU Media

  2. Rubbish arcticle - basically the tab. on

Is there any particular reason you have chosen to ‘plan ahead (and juggle other things)’ closer to the exam/hand-in period than before christmas, as you so rightly say when the Exec were still working and free to answer your pleas for help?

Sounds like you should focus on planning ahead properly and then not whinge when you’re behind and need help.

Also, any evidence to back up the point that ‘some of us needed them’ – was there actually anyone?

I never mentioned that I was behind and I’d rather not include specific examples. I have a right to air my views and highlight cases that I believe can be brought forward to be discussed by others, and now I’ve received a reply, so there’s the proof that people are talking!
      Thanks for your comment.
