October 12 was the first Union Council of 2011/12. Union Councillors make decisions on how our Students’ Union should be run, debate issues and vote on policy. I don’t think I quite realised when I was a fresher councillor, but Union Council truly is a very big deal. Each councillor represents 300 students, and cumulatively our 53 councillors represent the entire student body.
The second highest decision making body next to Board of Trustees, anything that is passed at Union Council affects the whole of our Students’ Union! From choosing to ban products in our store, to deciding what the executive should be doing; the policies they can vote on are endless!
One part of Union Council involves myself and the rest of the Executive performing individual reports about the things we’ve been up to and our plans for the year ahead. Councillors can then question us, offer suggestions and find out more about what we do.
Frustratingly, there is often not enough time to describe everything we have done to Councillors, but it is still nice to get feedback from students on some of the things we do.
You don’t have to be a Union Councillor to attend or be involved in any of the debate, to voice an opinion on something or to provide a different perspective. Last night we had several guests who came down, asked questions and provided their points of view on numerous points.
But even if you can’t attend, hopefully future councils will have the same level of tweeting from Label Online as this one did, keeping you informed about everything going on. Rumour on the street is that Label Magazine might be producing a report on what went on soon… VERY EXCITING.
